This 2012. Celebrating 40 young years of Indonesia's product design education and praxis.
In 2012, exactly 40 years after product design education first introduced in Indonesia, INDDES will host another design festival in Jakarta, with over 50 design students and graduates participating by showcasing their most recent design products. The festival is designed to reintroduce product design to the general public experientially.
We want Design Statement to be a memorable experience for everyone: a moment where the importance of design is experienced, realized, appreciated, and later, shared—an appreciative atmosphere that may give birth to Indonesian design star of future.
This is our statement.
REZA ANWAR
Project Leader
Product and industrial design enthusiasts and practitioners—also practitioners in-the-making—had always toyed with borders and limits over their experience in product design: this discipline’s wide and broad sphere of learning subfields and practices, or its overlappings over Indonesia’s rich culture of crafts.
Design Trip is an excursion towards a better knowledge over these and other subjects of practices in Indonesian design—with applied Open-Space Technologies for tutors and discussions
“...an active philosophy far greater than these passive responses to one particular idea. with an approach to life based on humanity and reason, Humanists recognise that moral values are properly founded on human nature and experience alone.”
Product design based its praxis in solving problems regarding fulfillment in human needs. Therefore, it doesn’t need much time for participatory design to make its way closer to its sole target user and issues. Design has been taught to be also experiential—not necessarily be only theoretical. It then developed into a concrete realization of man’s assumed values: humanism, then, has been inevitably applied in every design processes,
Subjectivity on the mind set of designers by now and then is constantly changing, though. Some find it on humble, touching-the-ground approaches on design product which orientation is based personally in response to its target user’s background and story.
This excursion will be held in February, inviting design enthusiasts, practitioners, students, institutional delegations, communities—practically everyone holding each important pillars of our discipline’s bright future, to attend classes and discuss over a new, fresh standard for us to start upon. We’re really eager to contribute in this history making!

We are moving forward. Facing Indonesia’s 40 years of product design academical development in 2012, INDDES-ITB is eager to embrace this very milestone with a celebration over the ever-expanding education: Design Statement 2012 is organizing a one-day academical school, unmistakably named Design School, with classes tutored by special teachers, lecturers, and practitioneers in Indonesian product design in Jakarta.
Design School in March 2012 is aimed for a broad range of new and fresh design enthusiast, young designers to-be, or high school students in search for a possible future in the applied visual disciplines—we would love for just everyone to come.
Indonesia’s young golem of Product and Industrial Design practice is the main theme for this exceptional school of design, inviting numerous professionals and teachers with years of experience to share in various classes. The goal is, to leave a trace of knowledge and appreciation through the graduates’ mind—the popular culture, society, for a proper brief of understanding in product design.
